Where it started

A Customer Walked Into the Gun Shop

He was having difficulty operating his pistol and asked Chris to weld or bolt tabs onto the back of the slide. Chris did not want to permanently modify the firearm, but he promised to find another answer.

1

A Promise Without an Answer

Chris told the customer to return in two weeks. At that moment, he had no idea what the solution would be—only that he could not let the customer down.

2

Pull From the Back—or Push From the Front

After studying several pistols, Chris recognized one shared characteristic: the slide could be pulled from the rear, but it could also be pushed from the front.

3

Scrap Plastic and a Small Mill

Chris found a leftover piece of plastic, bought an inexpensive milling machine and began making prototypes. The early versions worked, but they were too bulky and complicated. He kept removing everything the design did not need.

4

His Face Lit Up

Two weeks later, the customer returned and tried the first Handi-Racker. His face lit up. He offered Chris a $20 bill, but Chris handed it back. The product had been created to help him.

5

One Customer Became a Mission

Chris and Janet realized that many other shooters could benefit from the same idea. After extensive searching and many sleepless nights, they decided to take a gamble and pursue a patent.

Handi-Racker was not invented because we were looking for something to sell. It was invented because someone needed help.

Handi-Racker continues to develop practical products for shooters while remaining a family-operated Iowa business.

Handi-Racker today

Different Products Require Different Solutions

We choose the manufacturing method, material and size around what the product needs to do—not around what is easiest to market.

Injection molded

Small and Large Handi-Rackers

The green Small and orange Large Handi-Rackers are injection molded with gripping ridges and highly visible safety colors. Small and Large describe the Handi-Racker opening—not the caliber or marketed size of the pistol.

Precision machined locally

Specialty Machined Products

The Beretta Handi-Racker, Handi-Holsters and Handi-Holder are precision machined in our hometown from durable black high-density polyethylene.

Designed in Iowa

Practical Ideas, Not Copycat Products

Each Handi-Racker product begins with a real problem, hands-on testing and Chris’s engineer-by-thumb approach to making the solution simpler and more useful.

The people behind the products

A Family Business in Grimes, Iowa

Handi-Racker is not a large corporation with layers of customer-service departments. Chris and Janet are the people behind the business, the products and the decisions.

Questions are answered by people who understand how the products were designed, how they are made and why they work the way they do.

We appreciate every customer, every dealer and every opportunity to help another shooter.

Chris

Inventor, product designer, hands-on problem solver and self-described engineer by thumb. Chris is also the person customers can call directly when they need help.

Janet

The steady hand behind the family business. Janet helps make the major decisions, keeps Chris grounded and provides the executive oversight that every engineer by thumb needs.
